Is Propane Renewable Energy?

Propane is getting greener and more sustainable every year!

propane Cuero, TX Customers in Cuero and other communities in Texas and Oklahoma count on propane for a range of vital home functions, from space heating to hot water production to cooking food and drying laundry. And that doesn’t even account for propane’s role in recreation, including grilling and pool heating.

Propane is amazingly versatile, but is it renewable?

At Symank Energy, we’re proud to deliver a home fuel that is green — and getting greener by the day. Conventional propane has been listed as an alternative fuel in the 1990 Clean Air Act and the Energy Policy Act of 1992. Renewable propane promises an even lower-emissions fuel.

Where Conventional Propane Comes From

The conventional propane that American households use today is a co-product of natural gas extraction and oil refining. It comes from the same wells as those fuels; no new drilling happens in propane production. Nearly all propane the U.S. uses is produced domestically (much of it in our part of the country). This domestic production reduces the transportation involved in bringing propane to your home and somewhat insulates its price from global energy trends.

Convention Propane Is Green Energy

When determining how clean an energy source is, it’s useful to start with its carbon intensity, or how many grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) are generated to produce a given amount of energy. Conventional propane’s carbon intensity (CI) is lower than gasoline, diesel and even grid electricity in Texas and Oklahoma. Natural gas has a lower CI than propane, but natural gas is primarily methane, which is over 80 times more powerful at trapping heat in the atmosphere than CO2 over a 20-year period. Propane is methane-free. It also contains virtually no particulate matter, a known carcinogen.

And propane is becoming even better for the environment with the emergence of renewable propane.

What Is Renewable Propane?

Renewable propane is molecularly identical to conventional propane, meaning you can use it in propane equipment without modification. But renewable propane is made from organic and recycled feedstocks, including the following:

These renewable feedstocks, combined with renewable propane’s low-carbon production process, lower its overall carbon intensity score. Renewable propane made from domestic, non-rendered, used cooking oil has a CI that is roughly one-quarter that of conventional propane — and 16% of the CI of America’s average grid electricity. Plus, there is research underway that should take it even lower.

Renewable propane isn’t widely used in homes yet, but its production footprint grows every year. By 2027, U.S. production capacity for renewable propane and other innovative blends could reach 277 million gallons!
