If you’re planning to install new propane appliances or are building a new home that’s powered with propane, choosing a storage tank that’s the right size is one of the most important decisions you’ll have to make.
Ideally, your propane tank will be large enough to power your current (and potentially future) load of appliances, but not so large that you’ll have to pay more than necessary whenever you schedule a fuel delivery.
Here’s a guide to common propane tank sizes and their application in your Texas home.
120/150 gallon
These common tank sizes are primarily designed for hot water heaters, fireplaces, or space heating. It can also include power a range or clothes dryer.
200/250-gallon
A 250-gallon horizontal propane tank can support multiple appliances such as a clothes dryer, fireplace, and stove, in addition to a modest-sized home heating system.
500-gallon
A 500-gallon propane tank is the perfect fuel source for backup generators, or providing power to residential central heating and small commercial projects.
1000-gallon
Thousand-gallon tanks are typically used in large-scale industrial, commercial, and residential applications, or for homes that have large propane pool heaters.
RV tanks
RV propane tanks help keep your fridge and hot water running, as well as power your RV furnace and stove burners. There are two types of propane tanks used in RVs: ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) tanks, which are permanently mounted, and DOT (Department of Transportation) tanks, which are removable.
